Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that the woman found dead in Newark yesterday has been identified as Milta Aponte Castellano, 48, of Farmingdale.
Shortly after 11:00 am yesterday, Newark police officers were dispatched to the 100 block of Empire Street on a report of an injured person. Arriving officers observed an unresponsive female, outside a building.
An autopsy is scheduled to be performed today. The incident is being investigated as a homicide by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit.
