Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Millburn Public Works Department employee Anthony P. Boffa, 44, of Springfield, has been arrested and charged with theft.
Boffa is charged with third degree theft by deception for purchasing landscaping products through the Township and giving the products to a private landscaper to repay a personal debt.
The products included 85 bags of fertilizer and 112 bags of limestone, a total value of approximately $1,800.
“Any violation of the public trust will be rigorously prosecuted,” said Prosecutor Murray, who commended the Millburn Police Department and detectives of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office for their work on this case.
The theft was uncovered as part of a joint investigation with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Millburn Police Department. Boffa was issued a summons, processed, and released.
Boffa, who has been employed by Millburn Township for 25 years and most recently worked as a foreman, is scheduled to appear in Essex County Superior Court on March 8, 2013.
These are accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent until he pleads guilty or is found guilty in a court of law.
