On Friday, March 25, 2011, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office will host its first female only youth conference in recognition of Women’s History Month. Over 250 high school students from Newark, Montclair, Irvington, Maplewood, Bloomfield, Caldwell, Nutley, South Orange and East Orange are expected to attend the “Being Inspired & Empowered” youth conference. The goal of the one-day summit is to inspire and empower young ladies to reach their goals and learn about resources available in their communities.
This invitation-only youth conference will be held at the Essex County Police Academy, located at 250 Grove Avenue, in Cedar Grove, from 9:0 0 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray will give the welcome address. A panel discussion will be held to enlighten students about the perceived negative images of women in the mass media and how it relates to their everyday lives. Students will learn how they can break the cycle of negative perceptions.
Panelists will include Joyce Wilson Harley, Essex County Administrator, Susan Vernicek, an online entrepreneur, along with other prominent women in business, education, law, government and the non-profit arena.
The conference will include an interactive segment designed to engage students about the consequences of life situations. It will also include a session about various career opportunities. Students will also participate in a workshop where they will learn about nutrition and tips on staying healthy. They will also learn about the consequences of joining gangs. It is our hope that students will leave this conference with a better understanding of themselves and career opportunities.
