Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today additional charges have been filed against Bianca Young, 24, of Newark in connection with the death of her 5-year-old daughter, Charlize Young.
Late today Bianca Young was charged with three counts of endangering the welfare of a child. The charges have to do with conduct leading up to the 5-year-old’s homicide, including imposing corporal punishment on the child, abandoning the child, and failing to obtain necessary medical treatment.
Yesterday the Honorable Joseph Cassini, 3rd, signed a warrant charging Young with murdering her daughter. The mother remains in custody on $400,000 bail. Bail was not increased when the new charges were added today.
On Sunday, Mother’s Day, the mother and her boyfriend – who is not the father of the child — rushed the little girl to the hospital around 11 p.m. She was pronounced dead soon after arriving at the hospital.
An autopsy performed on the child determined she died from blunt impact injuries. The death was ruled a homicide by the Medical Examiner. The preliminary investigation indicates the child was struck and sustained injuries that caused internal bleeding.
The Division of Youth and Family Services has taken custody of another child, a four-year-old little girl. The mother is currently pregnant with a third child.
Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, head of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, said the investigation is active and ongoing.
These charged are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they plead guilty or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
