Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that an indictment was returned by an Essex County Grand Jury charging Stephanie Miles, 28, with aggravated manslaughter for the death of Raymond Utley, Jr., 33. Both were residents of Newark at the time. Miles was also indicted on weapons charges.
The indictment charges that on Oct. 13, 2009 Miles fatally stabbed Utley. According to Assistant Prosecutor William Neafsey, Miles stabbed Utley multiple times after the two got into an argument in their 9th floor apartment at 440 Elizabeth Ave., Newark.
The couple had been together for 15 years. They have two children.
Miles is scheduled to be arraigned on June 29.
Prosecutor Laurino commended Neafsey and the investigators.
These charges are mere accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
