Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that 5-year-old Juliana Vega was struck and killed by a hit and run driver at approximately 8:38 p.m. yesterday near 30 Columbia Avenue as she was crossing the street. The little girl was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:04 p.m.
This horrific tragedy is being actively investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.
At this time, a car meeting the description of the vehicle that struck the little girl has been recovered in Newark. It has been impounded and is currently in the custody of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office, where it is being processed by crime scene investigators. Several leads are being pursued.
