Acting Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an indictment was returned by an Essex County Grand Jury charging Frederick Pieters, 53, of Newark with the murder of his wife, Yvette Pieters.
Mrs. Pieters was fatally stabbed on Aug. 5, 2010 at her home in Newark. The indictment charges the defendant will killing his wife. It also charges him with two weapons offenses—possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose and unlawful possession of a weapon. In this case the weapon was a knife.
If convicted of these charges, the defendant faces 30 years to life in prison.
The defendant is currently incarcerated at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark on $500,000 bail.
These charges are mere accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent unless or until he either pleads guilty or is found guilty in court of law.
