Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today an Essex County Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Alrashim Chambers, 24, of Newark with the September 12, 2010 murder of Victoria Carmen White, 28, of Newark.
In addition to murder, Chambers was indicted on count of bias intimidation and two weapons offenses arising from his unlawful use of a handgun. Investigators believe the victim’s gender identification was a factor in her murder. The victim was a post-operative transgender female having undergone sex reassignment surgery.
If convicted of the charges, Chambers faces life in prison.
Chambers will be arraigned on July 12, 2011 before the Honorable Judge Peter J. Vazquez, Judge of the Superior Court.
These charges are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless or until they either plead guilty or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
