Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that Anthony Burrows, 24, of Newark was arrested for the murder of Russell Lighten, Jr., 24, also of Newark.
On Aug. 20, Lighten was fatally shot in the 400 block of South 17th Street in Newark at approximately 9:35 p.m. He was pronounced dead at approximately 10 p.m. at University Hospital.
Burrows was arrested without incident at a residence on Abbotsford Avenue in Newark at approximately 7:55 am by the Newark Police Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Section.
Newark Police Director DeMaio applauded the continued successful efforts and seamless cooperation demonstrated by the Department’s Fugitive Apprehension Section for the arrest of Burrows.
“The Fugitive Apprehension Section has routinely worked closely with various law enforcement agencies and investigative units within the Department to track and apprehend some of our areas most dangerous and violent criminals. Today’s arrest with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service was the result of an intense investigation conducted by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. I congratulate all of the officers involved in each aspect of the case and hope that the arrest will bring some degree of solace to the family and loved ones of the victim,” Director DeMaio said.
