Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Anthony Barham, 46, was arrested for abducting and sexually assaulting a 13-year-old boy as the teen walked along the street in Newark.
Barham, who has lived in East Orange, Newark and Irvington, was charged today with first degree kidnapping, first degree aggravated sexual assault, second degree sexual assault, third degree criminal sexual contact and third degree terroristic threats.
In August of 2011 the victim was approached on the street in Newark. It is alleged that Barham forced the teen into his vehicle, drove to Irvington and sexually assaulted the child. The victim was eventually able to escape and seek help.
DNA recovered from the victim was used to identify the defendant, resulting in the charges and subsequent arrest. The arrest was carried out today by members of the Special Victims Unit of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. At the time of the attack, Barham was on parole supervision wearing a GPS monitor.
Bail was set at $500,000 by the Honorable Peter V. Ryan, J.S.C.
These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent until they plead guilty or are found guilty in a court of law.
