Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Gene L. Muldrow, 35, of Jersey City has been charged with 2nd degree vehicular homicide and driving while his license was suspended – a 3rd degree crime. Muldrow struck and killed Mohammad R. Akhtar, 60, Avenel. The fatal collision occurred earlier this morning in the southbound lane of Route 1&9 in Newark. Muldrow, who was driving a BMW, is in critical condition at UMDNJ. Bail for Muldrow was set at $300,000 by the Honorable Cathy Wasserman, JSC.
These charges are mere accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless they plead guilty or are found guilty in a court of law.
