Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and East Orange Police Chief William Robinson announced today that the East Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force along with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Professional Standards Bureau are in the early stages of an investigation into a fatal police involved shooting in the city of East Orange.
This morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. East Orange police officers responded to a call that an adult male was being stabbed in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue. When they arrived on the scene they found a male stabbing his father-in-law.
Officers instructed the suspect, Karlando Roberts, 32, of East Orange to drop the knife. When he refused to comply, he was shot. Roberts was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. This matter will be presented to an Essex County Grand Jury.
The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.
