Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating three fatal shootings.
There were four shootings in Newark this morning. Three were fatal. In addition, two people were shot in Irvington, but survived.
The dead have been identified as Shawn Miller, 20, of Newark. He was fatally shot in the 100 block of Elizabeth Avenue in Newark at a housing complex where he lived. Drugs were discovered at the scene.
Marquis Robinson, 24, of Newark was fatally shot on his front porch in the 300 block of Osborne Terrace. A woman was also shot. Her identity is not being released at this time. Both were transported to University Hospital. Robinson was pronounced dead at 3:26 AM. The other victim is in critical condition.
The third victim killed in Newark this morning was Katrina Owens, a 37-year-old corrections officer from the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. She was shot and killed in the vicinity of Columbia Avenue following a dispute. (See separate press release)
Acting Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said, “It is important for us to move efficiently and effectively to remove these individuals who commit these crimes from our streets and bring them to justice. We will no longer continue to tolerate this violence in our city. We will continue to look to the public to partner up with us and report any information they have pertaining to these crimes.’’
At this time, no arrests have been made.
Since June 29, the Task Force has investigated nine murders in Newark, Irvington, Orange and Montclair.
