Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’ Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force arrested Emanuel Alvarado, 26, of Belleville, and charged him with filing a false police report.
On Sept. 17, at approximately 3:00 am, Alvarado reported to the Newark Police that he was carjacked at First Street and the ramp to I-280. Alvarado claimed that an assailant carjacked him and took his 2006 BMW 325i.
Upon investigating the reported carjacking, detectives from the Homicide Task Force ascertained that prior to reporting the alleged carjacking, Alvarado’s car was actually towed by officers from the New Jersey State Police after it was involved in a minor one-car accident on I-280 westbound in Newark.
“When we receive calls for service, we take a great deal of care to provide our constituents with the very best police services available. Mr. Alvarado reported that his vehicle had been carjacked. When later interviewed he recanted, admitting that he had lied. We take such actions extremely serious and subsequently arrested Mr. Alvarado for making the false police report. This is something that the department will not tolerate and will pursue any violators zealously,” said Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they either plead guilty or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
