Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that Maurice Mosley, 19, of Newark was arrested at 10:55 a.m. today for the murder of Douglas Brown, 29, also of Newark.
On July 16, 2011 at approximately 5:30 a.m. Brown was fatally shot during a robbery at Orange and Gray Streets in Newark.
Today, Mosley was arrested without incident at 23 North 11th Street. The arrest was made by the U.S. Marshals and the Newark Fugitive Apprehension Team.
“Since the murder of 29-year-old Douglas Brown on July 16, the Essex County Homicide Task Force has been vigorously following several leads gathered through their investigation and others offered anonymously. The gathered facts pointed to the suspect arrested today, 19-year-old Maurice Mosley. The Newark Fugitive Apprehension Team and the U.S. Marshals tracked Mosley to a North 11th Street address where he was arrested without incident. I commend the entire task force for their commitment and dedication as we remove yet another dangerous criminal from our city streets,” said Police Director Samuel DeMaio.
The homicide was investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force. Detectives from the Task Force developed information that led to the issuance of arrest warrants charging Mosley with murder, felony murder, robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. Bail has been set at $1 million by the Honorable Michael A. Petrolle, Judge of the Superior Court.
The suspect is being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark pending his arraignment later this week.
These are allegations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
