Two people were killed in an overnight motor vehicle collision on Route 1 and 9 in Newark.
The victims have been identified as Pingai Liwu of San Francisco and Gustavo Cunha, 23, of Elizabeth. Mr. Cunha was a back seat passenger in a Mazda. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Ms. Liwu, also a rear seat passenger in a Toyota 4 Runner, was pronounced at 1:10 a.m. at University Hospital.
The crash occurred at approximately 10:02 p.m. There were three occupants in the Mazda and five occupants in the Toyota.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the Toyota was traveling the wrong way on Route 1& 9 South when it collided head-on with the Mazda.
The investigation is active and ongoing. No one has been charged yet.
Alcohol does not appear to be a factor at this time; however, we are awaiting test results. The matter will be presented to a Grand Jury.
