Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that Terance Campbell, a former assistant conductor with New Jersey Transit, plead guilty before the Honorable Torkwase Sekou to stealing $3,500 from his former employer.
“When a public employee commits a crime related to his job, he creates two victims – his employer and society. With today’s admission of guilt, forfeiture of employment and pending state prison sentence, Mr. Campbell will now be held accountable to both,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Brandon Minde, who handled the case.
Today, Friday, Aug. 6, Campbell, 34, of Rahway plead guilty to one count of theft by deception for failing to make required deposits of $3,500, one count of official misconduct and one count of a pattern of official misconduct.
According to Assistant Minde, between January 2007 and Sept. 30, 2009, Campbell was reselling bundles of New Jersey Transit train tickets and keeping the cash. Campbell was employed at NJ Transit for seven years and was earning $54,330.
The assistant train conductor is scheduled to be sentenced on Sept. 17 before Judge Sekou.
In addition to an 18-month sentence with a 12-month period of parole ineligibility, the plea agreement permanently bars Campbell from holding a public job and requires him to pay $3,500 in restitution to NJ Transit.
