Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced the indictment of Thomas Grant, 23, of Frank of Newark for the murder of 15-year-old Yusef Johnson of Newark. The three-count indictment also charges Grant with two weapons offenses.
Johnson, an honor student and football standout at West Side High School, was fatally shot multiple times on Aug. 10, 2005 in Newark while walking home from a friend’s house. The grand jury returned the indictment on Friday, April 2, 2010.
Grant, who was arrested on Aug. 27, 2009, is currently incarcerated at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $750,000 bail.
These criminal charges are mere accusations. The defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
