Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today they are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying the man wanted in connection with a fatal shooting in Newark.

On Friday, Nov. 9, Hykine Johnson, 35, of Newark was fatally shot at a gas station on the corner of Washington and Court Street in Newark at approximately 7:45 p.m.

The suspect is a man who entered the mini mart and opened fire on the victim, who was pronounced dead at University Hospital at approximately 8:10 p.m. Camera photos of suspect are below.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating the murder of 17-year old Kamara Ingram of Irvington.

Ingram was shot at approximately 9:45 pm yesterday while sitting on the porch of a residence in the 200 block of South 10th Street. It appears she was visiting her boyfriend at that location. She was transported to University Hospital where she was pronounced dead at approximately 10 p.m.

“Last night’s shooting is being investigated by Essex County Prosecutor’s Office as well as the Newark Police Department. We are acting in concert to quickly arrest those actors who perpetrated this crime as to bring solace to the grieving family of the decedent .We will use every means at our disposal to find those responsible and swiftly prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law,” said Director DeMaio.

Acting Essex Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has joined the investigation of an assault on a resident of a Newark boarding home. The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit is now handling the investigation.

A 64-year-old woman, whose name is not being released at this time, was allegedly assaulted when she stepped outside the Hills Boarding Home to smoke a cigarette. She was found unconscious in front of the Hawthorne Avenue boarding home on Monday night, suffering from an apparent head wound. She is currently in critical condition at University Hospital.

“Given the serious nature of the alleged assault and the victim’s grave condition, we have become actively involved in investigating this case along with the Newark Police department,’’ said Acting Prosecutor Murray.

At this point, no arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. The investigation is active and ongoing.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Newark Police Department are investigating a homicide this morning in Newark.

The victim has been identified as Leonard Johnson, 33, of East Orange. Johnson was fatally shot at approximately 1:51 a.m. in the 500 block of Orange Street. He was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 2:14 a.m. today

Next of kin have been notified. No arrests have been made and no suspects have been identified. No other details are available at this time. The investigation is active and ongoing.

This is the 39th homicide in Essex County this year.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a fatal hit and run. A 47-year-old Maplewood man was struck and killed while changing a flat tire in the area of Routes 1 & 9 South, near the Pulaski Skyway in Newark at approximately 11:45 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 27.

The victim has been identified as Douglas Hodgson. He was pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 12:18 a.m. today, Monday, Feb. 28. Mr. Hodgson was returning from a business affair in New York City when he pulled his Lexus to the shoulder of the road to repair a flat tire.

Detectives at the scene said the motor vehicle that struck Mr. Hodgson appears to have been a 1998 white Acura CL, two-door. The driver of that vehicle did not stop following the collision. Unless the car has been repaired, it should display damage to the passenger side mirror, front fender and a missing parking light from the front passenger bumper.

Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas Fennelly, head of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Unit, ask anyone who witnessed the collision or any repair facility that fixed a car meeting that description, to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Vehicle Homicide Unit at 1-877-847-7432 or Detective Nardone at 973-621-4594. All calls will be kept confidential.

The investigation is active and is being carried out by the Newark Police Department and the Prosecutor’s Office. No other information is available at this time.

The death of Daniel Mejia, 23, of Newark has been determined to be a homicide. Mejia was found non-responsive in a parking lot on Honiss Street in Belleville on Tuesday, Jan. 4. at approximately 5:06 a.m.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Following an autopsy today, the cause of death has been determined to be trauma to the head. Mejia was shot in the head.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Belleville Police Department are investigating a suspicious death in Belleville, near the Newark border.

At approximately 5:06 a.m. Belleville Police were dispatched to 2 Honiss Street in Belleville. When they arrived at the scene they found an unresponsive male in the parking lot. He was later identified as Daniel Mejia, 23, of Newark. Mr. Mejia lived in Newark not far from the location where his body was discovered.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. At this time the death has been classified as a suspicious death, pending the autopsy which is scheduled for tomorrow. There appears to be some trauma to the body.

It is unclear at this point whether Mr. Mejia died at the location where he was discovered or whether the body was dumped there. When Mr. Mejia was found, he had no shoes on his feet, only socks.

No other details are available at this time. It is an active and ongoing investigation.

On Sunday, Sept. 12 at approximately 5 a.m. Victoria Carmen White, 28, of Newark was fatally shot at a private residence located at 159 Jacoby Street in Maplewood. Information released immediately following the shooting identified the victim as James White.

The victim’s legal name is Victoria Carmen White. Following an examination by the Medical Examiner and further investigation, it has been confirmed that the victim was a post-operative transgender female having undergone sex reassignment surgery. The victim’s birth certificate was legally changed to identify her as Victoria Carmen White.

The case is under active investigation. No other information is currently available.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that Charles Gatling, 21, of Union was fatally shot last night at approximately 9:20 p.m. in the 100 block of 40th Street in Irvington. A second man, Djuan Cirino, 19, of Union sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound.

The two men, traveling in a Pontiac Grand AM, stopped in Irvington allegedly to purchase marijuana. For reasons unknown at this time an unidentified man fired into the vehicle and fled.

Responding to a report of shots fired, Irvington police were dispatched to the 40th Street area. When they arrived on the scene, Gatling was found lying in the street suffering from a gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m. The preliminary investigation indicates he was shot in the vehicle he was driving.

Some time later, Cirino, a passenger in the vehicle, walked into Beth Israel Hospital in Newark suffering from a gunshot wound in the ankle. He was treated and released.

The investigation is ongoing. The next of kin have been notified.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that a 16-year-old girl was fatally shot last night in Orange.

At approximately 10 p.m. Orange Police officers responded to a report of shots fired. When they arrived in the area of Valley and Argyle Streets they discovered two victims — Swamaiya White, 16, and Myron Fulton, 18, both of Orange.

White sustained fatal injuries. Fulton, who was shot in the thigh, was treated and released from the hospital.

Next of kin have been notified. The investigation is continuing.
