Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and East Orange Police Chief William Robinson announced today that the East Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force along with the Essex County Prosecutor’s Professional Standards Bureau are in the early stages of an investigation into a fatal police involved shooting in the city of East Orange.

This morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. East Orange police officers responded to a call that an adult male was being stabbed in the 400 block of Norwood Avenue. When they arrived on the scene they found a male stabbing his father-in-law.

Officers instructed the suspect, Karlando Roberts, 32, of East Orange to drop the knife. When he refused to comply, he was shot. Roberts was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving. This matter will be presented to an Essex County Grand Jury.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating a fatal crash that resulted in the death of an ambulance attendant.

Keith Chipepo, 30, of Montclair sustained fatal injuries today when the private ambulance he was riding in was involved in a collision with a Chrysler Pacifica. The collision also involved a food truck and a county transportation bus. State Police were also on the scene. The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.

Following the crash, four people were transported to University Hospital in Newark. Chipepo was pronounced dead at the hospital. Three others were treated. They include the driver of the ambulance, a 26-year-old from West Orange; the patient, a 57-year-old woman; and the 34-year-old Bloomfield man who was driving the food truck. All three remain hospitalized. A fourth person, the driver of the county bus, declined treatment.

The investigation is active and ongoing. Additional information will be released when it becomes available.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is investigating the fatal shooting of Dehaven Chatman, 19, of Newark.

Yesterday afternoon Chatman was found in front of 20 14th Avenue in Newark with a gunshot wound at approximately 4:35 p.m. He was transported to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 4:59 p.m.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Irvington Police Director Joseph Santiago have identified the victims in yesterday’s double homicide in Irvington as: 1. Shanser Singh, age 24; 2.Satnam Singh, age 38. Autopsies performed today indicate that both victims died from stab wounds, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly of the Homicide Unit.

These deaths have been classified as homicides by the medical examiner. Both males resided at the house on Chancellor Avenue where the incident occurred and worked at nearby gas stations. Both victims were originally from India and there is no indication that the men were related to each other.

This incident remains under active investigation by the Essex County Homicide Task Force. Anyone with information should contact the Homicide Task Force at 877-847-7432.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Irvington Police Director Joseph Santiago have announced that the Essex County Homicide Task Force is investigating an apparent double homicide in Irvington today. Irvington police responded, shortly after 12:00 pm this afternoon, to a two family residence in the 600 block of Chancellor Avenue and discovered two unidentified males, unconscious, in the upstairs apartment. The males were pronounced dead at the scene.

The matter is being investigated as a homicide according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, of the Prosecutor’s Homicide Unit. According to Irvington Director Santiago, the victims appear to have been targeted, and this was not a random incident. The cause of death will be determined during autopsies which will be performed on Monday morning.

This matter remains under active investigation and authorities are asking anyone with information to contact the Essex County Homicide Task Force at 877-847-7432.

A male in his late twenties was shot and killed in an early morning shooting in the area of 34-36 Gray Street, Newark, according to Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray and Acting Newark Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio. Newark police responded to the above area, after 5:00 am on reports of shots fired, where they discovered the victim. The victim, identified as Douglas S. Brown, age 29, of Newark, was transported to University Hospital and subsequently pronounced dead, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly.

The investigation is being conducted by the Essex County Homicide Task Force.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating the fatal shooting of Katrina Owens, a 37-year-old corrections officer from the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick.

Owens was attending a barbeque with a male friend in the Newark/East Orange area when a dispute occurred. She was shot and killed. She is married and the mother of three children. She became a corrections officer in 2003. At the time of her death she was employed at New Jersey State Prison in Trenton.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No other details are available at this time. When more information becomes available, it will be released.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force is actively investigating three fatal shootings.

There were four shootings in Newark this morning. Three were fatal. In addition, two people were shot in Irvington, but survived.

The dead have been identified as Shawn Miller, 20, of Newark. He was fatally shot in the 100 block of Elizabeth Avenue in Newark at a housing complex where he lived. Drugs were discovered at the scene.

Marquis Robinson, 24, of Newark was fatally shot on his front porch in the 300 block of Osborne Terrace. A woman was also shot. Her identity is not being released at this time. Both were transported to University Hospital. Robinson was pronounced dead at 3:26 AM. The other victim is in critical condition.

The third victim killed in Newark this morning was Katrina Owens, a 37-year-old corrections officer from the Monmouth Junction section of South Brunswick. She was shot and killed in the vicinity of Columbia Avenue following a dispute. (See separate press release)

Acting Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio said, “It is important for us to move efficiently and effectively to remove these individuals who commit these crimes from our streets and bring them to justice. We will no longer continue to tolerate this violence in our city. We will continue to look to the public to partner up with us and report any information they have pertaining to these crimes.’’

At this time, no arrests have been made.

Since June 29, the Task Force has investigated nine murders in Newark, Irvington, Orange and Montclair.

A double shooting at 799 Broad Street in Newark, approximately 500 feet from Branford Place, is being investigated by the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office. One person died and the other was injured, but survived. The dead woman has been identified as Arlene Fields, 42, of East Orange. The surviving victim is a 31-year-old male from Newark. His name is not being released at this time.

Following the shooting, the surviving victim approached a police officer who immediately called for help. The shooting occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. Both victims were rushed to University Hospital, Ms. Fields was pronounced dead at the hospital.

At this stage of the investigation it appears the shooting was an isolated, narcotics-related incident. It also appears that the female victim was not the intended target. Cameras in the area are being reviewed by investigators.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No arrests have been made at this time. No other information is available at this time.
