Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and the Professional Standards Bureau of the Prosecutor’s Office are investigating a police involved shooting.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 12:30 p.m. on 4th Avenue and North 9th Street in the city of Newark, officers with the Essex County Sheriff’s Department Bureau of Narcotics were conducting an investigation when they attempted to arrest a suspect.

The suspect fled on foot. There was a brief foot chase. As the officers approached the suspect he reached for a gun. Officers fired two shots killing the suspect. A loaded gun was recovered at the scene and suspected narcotics were later found on the man who was shot.

The suspect who was killed has been identified as Jose Quinonez, 22, of Newark.

A crowd gathered as the incident unfolded. Acting Prosecutor Murray contacted the members of the Newark Clergy Alliance who responded to the scene to speak with residents and the family and to quell tensions. Consistent with protocol in all police involved shootings, the matter will be presented to the grand jury.

The names of the sheriff’s officers are not being released at this time. They were taken to the hospital to be evaluated.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that a husband and wife were hit by a BMW early this morning in Newark.

Jose Goncalves, 52, of Union was struck and killed in the vicinity of Park Avenue and 7th Street in Newark. Mr. Goncalves was standing outside his lunch truck “Joe’s Café’’ with his wife, Vania Goncalves, when he was hit and his wife was grazed by the BMW.

Mr. Goncalves was rushed to University Hospital where he was pronounced dead at approximately 8:56 a.m. His wife was treated and released. The driver of the BMW Sharese Fisher, 31, of East Orange was being treated for shock.

The investigation of the incident is active and ongoing. No other details are available at this time. No charges have been filed against anyone at this time.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that William Shannon, 69, an official scorer for Major League Baseball, died in a house fire in West Caldwell this morning.

Shannon lived in the home with his mother, Mildred Shannon, 92. Ms. Shannon sustained what are believed to be non-life threatening injuries. She was taken to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, where she is being treated.

The fire broke out around 8:45 a.m. Neighbors rescued Ms. Shannon. Firefighters, public works employees and others attempted to rescue Mr. Shannon from the second floor of the split level house located on Crossbrooks Lane but were unsuccessful.

Paramedics responded to scene and pronounced Mr. Shannon dead at approximately 11:30 am. The cause of death has not yet been officially determined.

At this time the fire does not appear to be suspicious, according to Assistant Prosecutor Jeffrey Cartwright, director of the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Arson Unit.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that Henry Jones, 18, of Newark was fatally shot in the head during an apparent carjacking. Jones was a passenger in a silver Jaguar X10. The incident occurred at 55-57 Parkview Terrance in Newark.

The vehicle was recovered. The homicide is still being investigated. No more details are available at this time.

Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino today announced that Richard Figueroa, 24, of Belleville was struck and killed this morning in Bloomfield in the area of Watsessing and Bloomfield Avenues.

Figueroa was pronounced dead at 12:48 p.m. The preliminary investigation has revealed that the vehicle that struck the pedestrian may have had a mechanical malfunction. The car was a new Honda. No charges have been filed at this time. The matter is being investigated by the Essex County Prosecutor’s Vehicular Homicide Unit and the Bloomfield Police Department.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Robert D. Laurino announced today that Robert Nevius, 91, was found unresponsive at approximately 8:40 a.m. in his Essex Fells home by members of the Essex Fells Police Department who went to the home to do a welfare check-in.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office and the Essex Fells Police Department are actively investigating the case. It is being treated as a homicide at this time. Next of kin have been notified.

Acting Prosecutor Laurino announced late today that the investigation into the death of Robert Nevius, 91, of Essex Fells is ongoing.

At this point we would urge the public to be vigilant and report to the Essex Fells Police Department any suspicious activity.

We will make more details available tomorrow after the autopsy is completed. In the meantime we can say that our preliminary investigation indicates Mr. Nevius was home alone at the time of his death and his residence was ransacked. There appears to be no evidence of forced entry.

Mr. Nevius lived at the address for 50 years. He is married.
