Murray and Newark Police Director Eugene Venable announced today that Kaseem Callender, 18, of Newark and a 17-year-old juvenile have been arrested for the murder of Raheem Hughee, 33, of East Orange.

On June 28, Hughee was shot and killed in the area of 41-45 Mountain View Avenue in Newark.

On July 17, a juvenile, who is not being named at this time because of his age, and Callender were arrested for the murder.

Callender is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility on $500,000 bail. He is scheduled to make his first court appearance tomorrow morning before the Honorable Ronald D. Wigler, Presiding Judge of the Essex County Criminal Division.

The investigation, which is active and ongoing, was conducted by the Newark Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force, which includes Newark Police officers.

These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they enter a guilty plea or are found guilty in a court of law.

Murray and Newark Police Director Sheilah Coley have announced that authorities have made an arrest in connection with June 10, 2014 shooting death of Coulibabry Zoumana Wilson. Wilson, who was a student at Weequahic High School, was shot during a disturbance in the 100 block of Leslie Street on Tuesday afternoon.

An investigation conducted by the Essex County Major Crimes Task Force, which includes detectives from the Newark Police Department, has led to the arrest of a seventeen year old Newark resident. The juvenile, who was arrested Wednesday night by task force detectives, has been charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Acting Prosecutor Murray praised the work of the Major Crimes Task Force. The juvenile, who cannot be identified at this time because of his age, has been remanded to the Essex County Youth Detention Facility, pending an appearance in the Family Division of the Superior Court, according to Chief Assistant Prosecutor Thomas S. Fennelly, who added that It is possible that the State will seek to have the juvenile tried as an adult. The investigation is continuing according to Fennelly.

THE CHARGES AGAINST THIS JUVENILE ARE ONLY ACCUSATIONS AND THE JUVENILE IS PRESUMED INNOCENT AT THIS TIME.

Murray, Irvington Police Director Joseph Santiago, Newark Police Director Samuel A. DeMaio, East Orange Police Chief William C. Robinson, along with State and Federal officials, announced today that four arrests have been made and warrants have been issued for 1 suspect wanted in the holiday spree of homicides in Essex County.

“I would like to extend my condolences to each and every family in the Essex County community struck by tragedy during this holiday season,” said Acting Essex County Prosecutor.

“We have made tremendous progress in each of these cases because of help from the public and once again we are asking for the public’s assistance in apprehending one suspect who remains at large,” said Acting Prosecutor Murray. “He is considered armed and dangerous.”

The spree began with the carjacking homicide of Dustin Friedland, a 30-year-old Hoboken lawyer, on Dec.15, 2013 at the Short Hills Mall.

On Dec. 21, at approximately 1:00 a.m. Reginald Terry, an 18-year-old college student, was shot and killed in the vicinity of 260 Washington Street in Newark at a party. A second person was shot, but sustained non-life threatening injuries.

Today, Damiar Pendergrass, 18, of Newark was arrested at a residence in Irvington for the murder of Mr. Terry. Last this afternoon, following a press conference in Newark, a second suspect, Raquan Langford, 19, of Newark was arrested in Newark. Both men have been charged with the murder of Mr. Terry. They are also charged with conspiracy, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

The Honorable Judge Robert H. Gardner has set bail for both men at $750,000.

On Dec. 25, at 12:40 a.m. Pierre Clervoyant, 34, of Elizabeth, Woodley Daniel, 32, of Hillside and Mushir Cureton, 27, of Newark were shot and killed at Slick’s Go-Go Bar, located at 371 Nye Avenue in Irvington. Two other persons were shot and injured in this incident.

A warrant has been issued by the Honorable Judge Michael Casale charging Anthony Fields, 19, of Newark with three (3) counts of murder, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

Fields remains a fugitive at this time. He is the only suspect still at large.

On Dec. 25, Zainee Hailey, 13, of Newark and Kasson Mormon, 15, of Newark were shot and killed in the100 block of Schley Street in Newark. In addition, a 14-year-old male was shot and injured. He remains hospitalized in serious condition.

A 15-year-old juvenile has been arrested and charged with the murders of Hailey and Mormon.
The juvenile is also charged with attempted murder of a third victim and with weapons charges. The 15-year-old has been remanded to the Essex County Youth Facility. His name is not being released at this time because he is a juvenile.

On Dec. 27 at 6:00 a.m. East Orange Police were dispatched to an apartment building at 39 South Munn Avenue where they found an unresponsive woman who was nine months pregnant. She has been identified as Fatoumata Owoseni, 26, of Maryland.

Her husband, Babatope Owoseni, 33, of East Orange was charged and arrested for murder. He is being held at the Essex County Corrections Facility. Bail was set at $750,000 by Judge Gardner.

ECPO Chief of Investigators Anthony Ambrose said the FBI Violent Crimes Fugitive Task Force and detectives from the ECPO are actively pursuing the suspects that remain at large.

Acting Prosecutor Murray commended the investigative and legal staff members that have worked tirelessly on these cases.

“I would also like to thank the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force investigative and legal staff, along with our state and federal partners, who continue to work around the clock to solve these cases. They have given up precious time with their loved ones to bring to justice to these individuals that we have charged.”

Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that two males have been arrested and charged with the murder of Jamil Bader, Jr., 18, of Newark.

Tyrique Spruell, 21, and a 16-year-old juvenile, both of Newark, were arrested and charged with murder. Spruell was arrested late last night. The juvenile was taken into custody this morning. Both are charged with murder, felony murder, conspiracy, robbery and weapons charges.

The Honorable Peter J. Vazquez, J.S.C., set Spruell’s bail at $750,000. He is being held at the Essex County Correctional Facility. The juvenile, whose name is not being released at this time, is being held at the Essex County Youth House.

On Sept. 13, Bader was fatally shot trying to stop a robbery at Jamil & Sons Family Grocery, the Clinton Avenue grocery store owned by his family.

Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio stated, “I am very pleased that through the dedicated work of the investigators assigned to this case we were able to arrest the individuals responsible for the senseless and tragic murder of one of our City’s youth. Again, I extend my heartfelt prayers to the victims’ family and loved ones and hope they derive some level of solace from these arrests.”

Murray and East Orange Police Chief William C. Robinson announced today that the East Orange Police Department and the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office are investigating an incident that resulted in the arrest of a 15-year-old juvenile from Newark.

The juvenile has been charge with assaulting a police officer, receiving stolen property and eluding police. His name is not being released at this time because of his age.

Between midnight and 1 a.m. today a rented Silver Chrysler 200 was stolen from a female at a hotel in Elizabeth near Newark Airport. East Orange police spotted the car in the vicinity of South Orange and Brookwood at shortly before 7 am and attempted to stop the vehicle. The driver fled. A pursuit followed. It ended with the juvenile hitting a marked East Orange patrol vehicle broadside.

A 20-year veteran of the East Orange police department sustained non-life threatening injuries and was taken to University Hospital. He was treated and released.

The investigation is active an ongoing. These are accusations. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until they plead guilty or are found guilty in a court of law.

Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide/Major Crimes Task Force and Newark Police are investigating a fatal shooting involving an off-duty Essex County Corrections Officer.

The preliminary investigation indicates that at approximately 10:55 p.m. yesterday an off-duty corrections officer was approached by an armed masked man in the 300 block of 7th Avenue in Newark. There was an exchange of gunfire. Both the corrections officer and the masked man sustained gunshot injuries.

Both were taken to University Hospital. The masked man, who was later identified as 20-year-old Steven McCrae, was pronounced dead at University Hospital at approximately 11:21 p.m. yesterday. The officer, who sustained multiple gunshot wounds, survived.

The cause of death was a gunshot wound. A 16-year-old juvenile has been arrested in connection with the incident and charged with carjacking and weapons offenses.

The investigation is active and ongoing. No other information is available at this time.

Murray and Newark Police Director Samuel DeMaio announced today that a 16-year-old juvenile and 18-year-old Isiah Adams, both of Newark, have been arrested for the robbery and murder of Miguel Torres, 37, also of Newark.

Mr. Torres, the owner of JNC Mini Mart located at 346 14th Avenue in Newark, was fatally shot at approximately 6:14 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 17 during an armed robbery of his store. He was transported to University Hospital and pronounced dead at 6:41 p.m.

In addition to being charged with the murder of Torres, the same 16-year-old juvenile was also charged with the murder and robbery of Wilfredo Campos. Mr. Campos, 36, of Newark was fatally shot on Dec. 28, 2011 at 598 Orange Street in Newark. He died from his injuries on Jan. 3, 2012.

“Today’s arrests are the result of the determination of the investigators from the Newark Police Department along with its law enforcement partners, to ensure that those responsible for these murders were brought to justice. The reckless behavior and disregard of human life demonstrated by these criminals will not be tolerated in the City of Newark,” said Police Director Samuel DeMaio.

Acting Prosecutor Murray said the investigation that led to the arrests was aided in part by cooperation from the public after photographs of the suspects were released.
“In addition to the extraordinary work done by law enforcement, we want to thank members of the public for coming forward and assisting in this investigation,’’ said Prosecutor Murray.

“Law enforcement officers had made significant strides but those efforts were enhanced by cooperation from the public,’’ she added.

In addition to Adams and the 16-year-old juvenile, a third individual has also been arrested. Azil Ellington, 19, of East Orange has been charged with carjacking a Honda Civic on Dec. 23, 2011 in the 600 block of Orange Street in Newark.

The mother of child, Crystal Spearman, 19, also of Irvington has been charged with endangering the welfare of the child. The child is in critical condition at University Hospital in Newark.

Both the mother and the 15-year-old boyfriend are in custody. The boyfriend is not the biological father of the child.

Laurino today announced that the 17-year-old East Orange juvenile, who opened fire at a carnival in Bloomfield on Friday, injuring another teenager, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault, two weapons offenses and resisting arrest.

The 17-year-old, who was charged today, was shot in the torso by a Bloomfield police officer during the incident at the carnival. He was subsequently taken to University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition. His name is not being released because he is a minor.

The victim, another 17-year-old from East Orange, was shot in the left elbow at the carnival. He was treated and released from the Clara Mass Hospital.

The investigation is ongoing.

The charges are mere accusations. A defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
