Newark Man Sentenced to 50 Years for Stomping Another Man to Death

Judge imposes another 4 years for theft

NewarkActing Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that Dwayne Johnson, 43, of Newark was sentenced to 50 years in New Jersey State Prison for the stomping death of Terrence Everett, 38, also of Newark. The Honorable Michael L. Ravin, Judge of the Superior Court, also sentenced Johnson to four years for theft. He must serve the sentences consecutively.

Under the No Early Release Act, Johnson must serve approximately 42 years before he is eligible for parole. He has been in state prison since January 2013 when he was charged with murder.

Johnson and Everett were friends but at some point they got into an argument over cigarettes when Johnson’s girlfriend asked Everett for a cigarette and Everett suggested she might have money for cigarettes if Johnson had a job. The dispute between the two men continued until December when Everett punched Johnson’s girlfriend.

On Jan. 7, 2013, ten days later, Johnson saw Everett walking down the street and attacked him. Johnson stomped and kicked Everett in the head repeatedly and violently, leaving him bleeding from his head in the intersection of Avon Avenue and South 20th Street in Newark. Everett died from his injuries.

A passerby videotaped the attack. After Johnson stomped Everett to death he rifled through the victim’s pockets.

Following a three-week trial, an Essex County jury found Johnson guilty of murder and theft.

Asking for a life sentence, Assistant Prosecutor Ahmad Rasool said Johnson has never taken responsibility for the murder and has never shown remorse.

“This defendant stomped a man to death in broad daylight on a public street but he seems to want to point the finger at everyone else,’’ said Rasool, who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Paul Bradley.

Newark Man Found Guilty of Murder

NewarkActing Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn A. Murray announced today that an Essex County jury has convicted Dwayne Johnson, 43, of Newark of first degree murder for killing Terrence Everett, 38, also of Newark.

Following a three-week trial before the Honorable Michael L. Ravin, the jury deliberated for four hours before finding Johnson guilty of murdering Everett by stomping and kicking in the head. The deadly assault, which occurred on Jan. 7, 2013, was captured on videotape by a passerby who witnessed the attack.

The victim and the defendant had been friends. The two got into an argument after Johnson’s girlfriend asked Everett for cigarettes. The feud between Everett and Johnson continued through December of 2012 and resulted in Everett punching Johnson’s girlfriend.

Ten days later, Johnson attacked Everett in broad daylight and beat him to death, leaving him in the intersection of Avon Avenue and South 20th Street. Police responded to the location on a report of a man bleeding from the head.

“We’re satisfied with the jury’s verdict. It sends a clear message that the citizens of Essex County will not tolerate an individual resorting to violent revenge resulting in murder as a means to resolve a dispute,’’ said Assistant Prosecutor Ahmad Rasool who tried the case with Assistant Prosecutor Paul Bradley.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 12 before Judge Ravin.

Johnson faces a minimum of 30 years without the possibility of parole.

Following the verdict Judge Ravin revoked Johnson’s $500,000 bail. He is currently being held in the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark.
